Privacy

The short version

We count visits so we know which pages and downloads are used. The counts are kept on a server we own. We do not sell them, share them, or use them to follow you around the web. The site has no accounts, no advertising and no cookies. The one form is the contact form, described below.

What we count

When you open a page, a small script reports to our own statistics server:

  • the page address and the address of the page you came from, if there is one;
  • your browser, operating system and screen size;
  • your language setting;
  • the country you are in, worked out from your connection. We do not keep your IP address.

We also count these clicks: downloading a data file, following a link to another website, and opening a glossary word. For each we record the file, the link or the word, and the page it was on.

The script sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. To tell one visit from another it uses a scrambled code made from your connection details, which cannot be turned back into them. It cannot tell who you are.

Where it goes

The statistics run on Umami, software we host ourselves on a server we own. The numbers do not go to an advertising company or an analytics service run by someone else. We do not sell them or share them with anyone. We use them to decide what to improve and to report how much the site is used.

If you do not want to be counted

If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” signal, the script does nothing: nothing is sent and nothing is counted. You can also block the script in your browser or with a content blocker; the site works the same without it.

Our hosting

The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any host, Cloudflare handles each request and keeps its own technical records of it, such as your IP address, under its privacy policy. We use those records only to see how much traffic the site gets and to block abuse. The fonts, charts and maps come from our own site; nothing is loaded from other companies’ servers, except on the contact page, as described next.

The contact form

If you send us a message through the contact form, we keep what you type: the message, the topic you chose, and your name and email address if you gave them. Only the message is required. We use it to answer you and to fix what you tell us about, and for nothing else. It is stored in a database on Cloudflare and a copy is emailed to the person who runs this site. We do not share it, and we delete each message after one year.

To limit how many messages one connection can send, we also keep a scrambled code made from your connection details, for the same year; it cannot be turned back into your address.

The form checks that you are a person with Cloudflare Turnstile, which does not use puzzles or ask for personal details. Its script is loaded from Cloudflare only when you start filling in the form, and Cloudflare says it does not read what you type; see Cloudflare’s Turnstile privacy statement.

To see, correct or delete a message you sent, use the contact form and say which one. We will answer.
