Galisteo Reservoir

Galisteo Reservoir held 0 acre-feet on Oct 16, 2026: it is empty, as a dry dam normally is.

A dry flood-control dam: no permanent pool, and water only while a flood is held back. On Galisteo Creek. Rio Grande basin.

The latest reading for this reservoir is from Oct 16, 2026, older than most others.

These dams are empty by design. They store water only while holding back a flood and release it afterwards, so zero is normal and the news is when they are not zero.

About this reservoir

An Army Corps dry flood control dam on Galisteo Creek, completed in 1970. It has no permanent pool and holds water only briefly during storms before draining through an ungated outlet toward the Rio Grande below Cochiti.

How to use these numbers

  • A storm-runoff detector. Any storage at all is a flood event. Peak storage and days impounding describe the size and duration of Galisteo Creek floods, which are almost entirely monsoon driven.

Read before quoting a number

  • Percent full is not meaningful for a dry dam.
  • The operator table stops at 5,610 ft, just above the top of the flood pool, so storage above that level cannot be computed.

How capacity is known

Capacity comes from the operator's elevation-to-storage table (USACE, effective 1984-01-01), checked against the storage the operator reports. Since the table took effect, it reproduces reported storage from reported elevation to within 0 acre-feet in the median (0.00% of storage), across 3,211 days. Where an older table was in force, we recover its capacity from the record and say how well supported it is.
