Jemez Canyon Reservoir

Jemez Canyon Reservoir held 0 acre-feet on Nov 2, 2026: it is empty, as a dry dam normally is.

A dry flood-control dam: no permanent pool, and water only while a flood is held back. On Jemez River, above its confluence with the Rio Grande. Rio Grande basin.

These dams are empty by design. They store water only while holding back a flood and release it afterwards, so zero is normal and the news is when they are not zero.

About this reservoir

An Army Corps flood and sediment control dam on the lower Jemez River, completed in 1953. It no longer keeps a permanent pool; storage has been essentially zero outside of storm events for years, so any storage recorded is a flood being held.

How to use these numbers

  • Storm and flash-flood events on the Jemez. Each year's peak storage and the number of days impounding are a record of monsoon and snowmelt floods from the Jemez Mountains, including post-fire runoff.
  • Sediment from a fire-affected watershed. Capacity loss here reflects sediment from the Jemez, whose upper watershed has burned repeatedly.

Read before quoting a number

  • Percent full is not meaningful for a dry dam. Use peak storage and days impounding.
  • In earlier decades Jemez Canyon did hold a sediment pool, so early-record storage is not comparable with recent years.

How capacity is known

Capacity comes from the operator's elevation-to-storage table (USACE, effective 2019-01-01), checked against the storage the operator reports. Since the table took effect, it reproduces reported storage from reported elevation to within 0 acre-feet in the median (0.00% of storage), across 2,863 days. Where an older table was in force, we recover its capacity from the record and say how well supported it is.
